Optimization of laser welding stainless steel 316L for radioactive sealed sources

Radioactive sources of Cs-137 are made of 316L stainless steel, and are encapsulated by laser welding using a pulsed Nd: YAG laser. The laser welding process is characterized by the high density of energy deposited in the material allows welding without filler. It is an automated process that ensures the reproducibility and quality. Cylinder taps are circles whose geometry of diameter 1.7 mm and 1.0 mm 316L stainless steel used in sealed sources were welded. Photographic records were taken to assess the weld quality. Cross-sections were polished and attack to get the penetration and the welding quality. The Taguchi methodology is used to optimize the welding parameters, a L25 orthogonal array with six factors and five levels were used. Power, time, focus, frequency, speed and pulse shape were evaluated. Settled that the optimal parameters for laser welding of steel 316L are 700 W peak power, pulse duration 6 ms, focus 0.0 mm. Weld penetration was optimized from 216μm to achieve 614μm. (author)

Fuentes radiactivas de Cs-137 son fabricadas con acero inoxidable 316L, encapsuladas mediante soldadura láser usando un láser pulsado de Nd:YAG El proceso de soldadura láser se caracteriza por la alta densidad de energía depositada en el material que permite realizar soldaduras sin aporte. Es un proceso automatizado que garantiza la reproducibilidad y calidad del producto. Se soldaron las tapas de cilindros cuya geometría son circunferencias de 1,7 mm y 1,0 mm de diámetro de acero inoxidable 316L a utilizarse en las fuentes selladas. Se tomaron registros fotográficos para evaluar la calidad de la soldadura. Se realizaron cortes transversales que fueron pulidos y atacados para determinar la penetración y calidad de soldadura. Utilizando la metodología Taguchi se optimizó los parámetros de soldadura, con un arreglo ortogonal L25 se evaluaron 6 factores con 5 niveles. Se evaluó la potencia, tiempo, foco, frecuencia, velocidad y forma del pulso. Se determinaron que los parámetros óptimos principales para la soldadura láser de acero 316L son potencia máxima 700 W, duración de pulso 6ms, foco 0.0 mm.
