Evaluation in the resonance range of nuclei with a mass number above 220
Description
The author discusses the problems posed by the evaluation of neutron data for fissile or fertile nuclei in the range of resolved or unresolved resonances. It appears to take several years until the data of an experiment are used by the reactor physicists. If one wants to have recent data at one's disposal, one cannot have recourse to evaluated-data libraries. Moreover, the existing parameter sets are only fragmentary. A new evaluation is, therefore, necessary for nearly all of these nuclei, but it cannot be based upon different parameter sets; these are indeed contradictory, and the evaluator will have to go back to the original data. The author shows for the set of σf of 235U, that a careful comparison of the data shows up unsuspected local defects. Some examples illustrate the deviation between analyses carried out by different methods and between the results on the established divergences. The parameters or cross-sections are far from being known with the precision one would desire. This fact gives rise to anomalies in the interpretation of data necessary for understanding and simulation in the range of unresolved resonances. But the introduction of concepts connected with sub-threshold fission noticeably furthers this understanding. Therefore a comparison of the methods of analysis must be made in more and more accurate measurements (evaluation and correction of systematic errors). (author)
Abstract (French)
L' auteur examine les problemes poses par l'evaluation des donnees neutroniques pour les noyaux fissiles ou fertiles dans le domaine des resonances resolues ou non. Tout d'abord il apparait un ecart de plusieurs annees entre l'execution d'une experience et l'utilisation des donnees de celle-ci par les physiciens des reacteurs. On ne peut, si l'on veut disposer de donnees recentes, se reporter aux bibliotheques de donnees evaluees. De plus les jeux de parametres qui existent sont fragmentaires. Une nouvelle evaluation est donc necessaire pour a peu pres tous ces noyaux; mais elle ne pourra se faire a partir des differents jeux de parametres; ceux-ci sont en effet contradictoires. Et l'evaluateur devra remonter aux donnees originales. L'auteur montre, pour l'ensemble de σf du 235U, qu'une comparaison soignee des donnees fait apparaitre des defauts locaux insoupconnes. Quelques exemples illustrent la dispersion des analyses effectuees par differentes methodes et des resultats sur les divergences constatees. On est loin de connaitre les parametres ou les sections efficaces avec la precision desiree. Il en resulte des anomalies dans l'interpretation des donnees, necessaire pour la comprehension et la simulation dans le domaine des resonances non resolues. Mais l'introduction des concepts lies a la fission sous le seuil fait nettement progresser cette comprehension. Ainsi il faut effectuer, en plus de mesures plus precises (evaluation et correction des defauts systematiques), une comparaison des methodes d' analyse. (author)Additional details
