Literature Survey on Carbon Deposition from Carbon Monoxide. Dragon Project Report
Description
At temperatures below 1000°C, carbon monoxide is decomposed according to the following equation: 2C0 --> C + CO2. Under ordinary circumstances this reaction cannot be observed, but when iron, nickel or cobalt are present, a strong catalytic action is observed, and free carbon is formed. The presence of small percentages of hydrogen has been shown to be an accelerator of the catalytic decomposition of carbon monoxide. It is interesting to investigate the work which has been carried out on this subject, as in the Dragon Reactor Experiment we shall have some carbon monoxide and hydrogen at low partial pressure in the coolant circuit, streaming on alloys' surfaces containing Fe or Ni in the temperature range of 350°-750°C.
