Observations and conclusions from 10 years of periodic quality controls on operational dispersant stockpiles

Description

Results of periodic checking for quality of French Navy dispersant stockpiles over the last ten years were reported. Similar controls were also maintained for dispersant stockpiles of some oil companies. Data was collected about density, viscosity, pour point, flash point, and the efficiency of the dispersants, as well as their appearance, colour, presence of a deposit and phase separation. The data was statistically analyzed to get a better understanding of medium and long-term ageing, the importance of the type of storage and climatic conditions. Results showed a tendency to phase separation, reduced efficiency attributable to age differences, a positive correlation between changes in density and efficiency, and interdependence of viscosity, colour, phase separation and deposition. Pour point and flash point determinations provided no useful information. Periodic recirculation of the content of storage tanks, or rolling of drums on the ground, was recommended to reduce the risk of phase separation. 3 tabs
