Synchronization-induced period gaps and ultra-short periods in magnetic cataclysmic binaries
Description
The effects of synchronization on the dynamical evolution of magnetic cataclysmic binaries are investigated theoretically by means of numerical simulations. The results are presented graphically and characterized in detail. It is found that these binary systems can be brought out of contact, producing a period gap. It is inferred that DQ Her stars can evolve into AM Her stars, and that binaries with hydrogen-rich companions can have periods shorter than the conventional limit of 72 h. 17 references
