An experimental study of fuel-coolant interactions in freon-water and water-molten tin systems in stratified and injection geometries

Description

We report experiments on the mitigation of fuel-coolant interaction by augmentation of the initial void fraction in the coolant. The systems under investigation are water-freon in a stratified geometry and molten tin-water in an injection configuration. Bringing the initial void fraction above a threshold level, by injecting air into the freon, totally eliminates the occurrence of a vapor explosion. Energetic interactions are observed between the water and the tin but the available data do not allow to conclude if they are fully explosive or only rapid vaporizations. (author)
