The resolving limit of a three-diode coincidence circuit

Description

To investigate the resolving limit of a three-diode coincidence circuit according to De Benedetti and Richings, a complete coincidence device, consisting of diode stage, amplifier, amplitude discriminator, and Univibrator was tested with pulses of 10-9 s risetime and 2 x 10-9 s basal duration. The amplitudes were measured and also the integrals of the pulses received at the amplifier output as well as the resolution curve dependent on the interesting parameters-amplitude of the input pulses, input resistance of the amplifier, operating conditions of the diodes, etc. In order to explain the measurements certain investigations were made. The resolution curve of the coincidence device was deduced and the resolving time calculated. It was calculated how the diode stage, the amplifier noise and the matching of the amplifier to the diode stage determine the resolving time of the coincidence device. An analysis of the measurements and theoretical results yielded 10-11 s as the lowest resolving time-limit which can be realized with a three-diode coincidence device under optimum conditions. The derivation of the resolution curve is given and the measurements are reported. It is shown that experimental and theoretical results are in good agreement. (author)

Abstract (French)

Pour etudier la limite de resolution d'un circuit de coincidence a trois diodes, selon la methode de De Benedetti et Richings, l'auteur a essaye un systeme a coincidences complet comportant un ensemble de diodes, un amplificateur, un selecteur d'amplitude et un univibrateur, pour des impulsions d'un temps de montee de 10-9 s et d'une duree de base de 2 x 10-9 s. Il a mesure les amplitudes et les integrales des impulsions recues a la sortie de l'amplificateur ainsi que la courbe de resolution en fonction des parametres interessants (amplitude des impulsions d'entree, resistance d'entree de l'amplificateur, regime de fonctionnement des diodes, etc.). L'auteur a cherche a expliquer les mesures effectuees. Il a deduit notamment la courbe de resolution du systeme a coincidences et calcule le temps de resolution. Il a determine comment l'ensemble diodes, le bruit de l'amplificateur et le dispositif d'adaptation de l'amplificateur a l'ensemble diodes conditionnent le temps de resolution du systeme a coincidences. L'analyse des mesures et les resultats de calculs theoriques montrent que 10-11 s est le temps de resolution le plus court qui puisse etre obtenu avec un systeme a coincidences a trois diodes dans les conditions optima. L'auteur donne la derivee de la courbe de resolution et indique les mesures. Il montre que les experiences confirment les calculs theoriques. (author)

Para investigar el limite de resolucion del circuito de coincidencia con tres diodos de De Benedetti y Richings, se ha ensayado un dispositivo completo de coincidencias consistente en la etapa de diodos, amplificador, discriminador de amplitudes y univibrador, utilizando impulsos de 10-9 s de tiempo de elevacion y 2 x 10-9s de anchura en la base. Se han medido las amplitudes y las integrales de los impulsos recibidos a la salida del amplificador, asi como la curva de la resolucion en funcion de diversos parametros de interes (amplitud de los impulsos de entrada, resistencia de entrada del amplificador, condiciones de funcionamiento de los diodos, etc.). Se han hecho ciertas consideraciones para explicar los resultados obtenidos. Se ha deducido la curva de resolucion del dispositivo de coincidencia y se ha calculado el tiempo de resolucion. Se ha deducido como la etapa de diodos, el ruido del amplificador y el acoplo entre aquella y este determinan el tiempo de resolucion del circuito de coincidencia. Las deducciones teoricas y el analisis de las mediciones dan para el tiempo de resolucion del circuito un valor minimo de 10-11 s en las condiciones optimas. Se indican los resultados de las mediciones y la manera como se deduce la curva de resolucion. Se muestra como los resultados experimentales coinciden bien con la teoria. (author)

Dlya issledovaniya predela razreshayushchej sposobnosti trekhdiodnoj skhemy sovpadeniya po De Benedetti i Richingsu byl ispytan polnyj pribor sovpadenij, sostoyashchij iz diodnoj yachejki, usilitelya, amplitudnogo diskriminatora i monovibratora pri impul'sakh s vremenem narastaniya v 10-9 sekund i s osnovnoj prodolzhitel'nost'yu v 2 x 10-9 sekundy. Izmeryalis' amplitudy, a takzhe vychislyalis' integraly impul'sov, poluchaemye pri vykhode iz usilitelya; krome togo, stroilis' krivye razresheniya v zavisimosti ot predstavlyayushchikh naibol'shij interes parametrov (amplituda vkhodyashchikh impul'sov, soprotivlenie pri vkhode v usilitel', rezhim raboty diodov i t.d.). Dlya obyasneniya izmerenij proveden ryad issledovanij. Byla vyvedena, v chastnosti, krivaya razreshayushchej sposobnosti pribora sovpadenij i bylo podschitano vremya razresheniya. Bylo ustanovleno, kakim obrazom diodnaya yachejka, pomekhi usilitelya i soglasovanie usilitelya s diodnoj yachejkoj privodyat k opredeleniyu vremeni razresheniya pribora sovpadenij. Analiz izmerenij i teoreticheskie rezul'taty pokazali, chto pri optimal'nykh usloviyakh trekhdiodnyj pribor sovpadenij pozvolyaet dostich' naimen'shego predela vremeni razresheniya v 10-11 sekund. Privodyatsya dannye o proiskhozhdenii krivoj razreshayushchej sposobnosti i soobshchayutsya rezul'taty izmerenij. Ukazyvaetsya na khoroshee sovpadenie ehksperimental'nykh dannykh s teoreticheskimi vykladkami. (author)
