Pulse radiolytic formation of univalent lead and its reactivity towards some Co(III) complexes

Description
Pulse radiolysis of aqueous Pb2+ solutions gives a transient absorption spectrum with two maxima at 275 and 315 nm. This absorption is due to the formation of Pb+ as a result of the reaction of esub(aO)sup(-) with Pb2+. The specific rate of this reaction was found to be 3.5x1010 mole-1s-1. The reactivity of univalent lead towards Co(III) complexes has been studied and the specific rates of the corresponding reactions have been determined. Solutions were irradiated at about 29 deg C with 5 ns pulses of approximately 8 MeV electrons at currents up to 5 A from the Notre Dame Arco Model LP-7 Linear Accelerator. Initial concentrations of esub(aq)sup(-) determined spectrophotometrically were usually about 10 μM. (T.I.)
