Differentiated thyroid carcinoma-overview of the 40 years experience

A survey on differentiated thyroid carcinoma is presented and forty-year experience with diagnosis, therapy, prognosis and monitoring of the patients are discussed The authors followed since 1959 to 2001 a cohort of 6300 the patients suffering from differentiated thyroid carcinoma. For diagnostic purposes the basic laboratory marker is the level of thyroglobulin, from imaging methods plays very important role ultrasonography of the thyroid and neck. An ablative dose of radioactive iodine is given postoperatively in a WB scintigraphy. On the basis of the experience a schema for the care of the patients is proposed including examination, therapy and follow-up of the patients.
