The determination of oxygen in potassium after distillation

  • 1. Oesterreichische Studiengesellschaft fuer Atomenergie G.m.b.H., Seibersdorf. Inst. fuer Metallurgie

Description

The analysis of oxygen in potassium is performed in a similar manner, as in sodium, namely distillation of potassium, dissolution of the residue in water and titration with hydrochloric acid. Tantalum crucibles may be used for the distillation up to 2500C, silicacrucibles to even higher temperatures. A device is introduced which allows to dissolve the residue in water without contamination by the atmosphere (CO2). Oxygen contents of an open bath of potassium from the glovebox were determined, as well as of potassium from barrels, as delivered. The concentrations found were between 10 and 1000 ppm. (author)
