Description

The grain boundary carbide precipitation in medium- and high-carbon steels with and without vanadium microalloying additions has been studied. The role of vanadium additions in promoting ferrite film and nucleation of fragmented cementite particles prior to pealrite formation was examined in high carbon steels. The precipitation of vanadium carbide occurred in the pro eutectoid and pealrite ferrite was observed. The morphologies of the iron carbide and alloy carbide formed at the grain boundary were examined to elucidate the mechanism of precipitation in steels with and without vanadium addition. (author)
