Charm physics -- The theory case for a new generation of experiments
Description
The author discusses charm decays, lifetimes, and branching ratios, in terms of what is known today, by theory and experiment, and what could be learned from a new facility. A Tau Charm Factory will allow the advantage of lower standard model backgrounds in looking at charm particle decays. Questions the author feels are open include lifetimes of B, Λ, and Ξ particles, their branching ratios in SL and NL decays, and rare decay modes. Also the possibility to study D0-bar D0 oscillations, and studies of CP violation effects. The author argues the primary purpose of such a facility would allow study of QCD in novel environments under controlled laboratory conditions. One can study charm and lepton decays, charmonium spectroscopy, and light quark/gluonia spectroscopy. In addition the facility opens the possibility of finding new physics in any of these systems
