Ionization conditions in the interarm gas of M 33

Description

Deep spectroscopic observations of the galaxy Messier 33 in the spectral region lambda lambda 4300-6700 A show the presence of the lambda 5007 A emission line of [0 III] in the interarm region. We derive for the log I(5007)/I(H/sub β/) a preliminary value of .12, which indicates moderate ionization conditions in the interarm gas. 2 figs., 7 refs
