In der Heißen Abfallzellen-Anlage in Jülich (HAZ) wird ein Trockenlager für max. 72000 abgebrannte kugelförmige Brennelemente (BE) des Versuchskernkraftwerkes AVR realisiert. In diesem Lager werden Lagerkannen mit max. 1000 Brennelementen eingelagert. Es sind jeweils 2 Lagerkannen in einem Lagergestell aufeinandergestellt. Die Lagerkannen werden mit Außenluft gekühlt. Die Nachwärme der Brennelemente wird aus den Kannen an die Zellenluft abgegeben, die dann mit natürlichem Auftrieb im Lagergestell aufsteigt und über eine Lüftungsanlage mit Filtersystem in die Umgebung abgeleitet wird. Im Rahmen des Betriebes dieses Lagers wird ein begleitendes Meßprogramm durchgeführt, mit dem Ziel, die bisher rein rechnerisch ermittelten Daten über die Temperaturen im Lager und die Aktivitätsfreisetzung aus dem Lager experimentell zu überprüfen.
