Remediation and decommissioning of radioactive waste facilities in Estonia
Description
The paper gives an overview about the progress achieved during the recent years in remediation and decommissioning at the former Paldiski Nuclear Training Centre in Estonia. The Soviet Navy for training the navy personnel to operate submarine reactors managed the facility with two nuclear reactors. After the breakdown of the USSR, the facility was shut down and transferred to Estonia in 1995. The site decommissioning strategy was worked out in collaboration with an international advisory group PIERG, Paldiski International Expert Reference Group. The developments in the establishment of radioactive waste management infrastructure as well as in the implementation of specific waste management projects are result of joint efforts of the Estonian relevant authorities and international cooperation projects.
