Description
This paper discusses Andrei Sakharov who was a pioneer in hadron physics. His insight led to investigations with new results that pose a challenge to QCD today. Sakharov took quarks seriously already in 1966 when the particle physics establishment ridiculed the quark model. He asked Why are the Λ and Σ masses different? They are made of the same quarks exclamation point His answer that the difference rose from a flavor-dependent hyperfine interaction led to relations between meson and baryon masses in surprising agreement with experiment
