Characterization of high intensity beam from 2.45 GHZ microwave ion source

Description

A high current microwave ion source delivering milliamperes (>12 mA) of proton beam current together with an LEBT is currently operational at VECC. The transportation of ∼ 8mA of beam current up to 3m from the ion source through a square slit of 1cm x 1cm has been successfully accomplished. The operational experience of beam transport and matching to the inflector educated us that for improving the transport efficiency it is needed to exploit the space charge neutralization. For this purpose we have developed a beam induced fluorescence monitor which can do non-interceptive measurements of the beam profiles by capturing the residual gas fluorescence through a CCD camera. Details of non-interceptive measurement of beam profiles of high current beam and how this profile compresses with space charge neutralization in the beam line will be discussed. (author)
