Applications and development requirements for multi-MeV light atom beams

  • 1. Princeton University, Plasma Physics Laboratory, P.O. Box 451, Princeton, New Jersey 08544

Description

Energetic neutral beams of various light atoms have been proposed for a number of fusion applications including diagnostics, heating and current drive in tokamaks, and to maintain the electrostatic potential in tandem mirror end cells. These beams would be formed from negative ions which would be accelerated to energies in the range of 1 MeV/amu and then neutralized. We review these applications, the problems in their implementation, and what developments in the way of neutralizers, sources, and accelerators would enhance their feasibility
