Disposal of control rods
Description
Due to their considerable activity inventory, spent control rods from light water reactors are subject to special treatment as radioactive waste. PWR control assemblies are dismantled under water and subsequently packed into casks. BWR control rods are conditioned in hot cells, which has many advantages over underwater treatment. Final storage of the conditioning products is still a problem, since the activities of the packagings may exceed the limits established for the Konrad facility. (orig.)

Steuerelemente aus Leichtwasserreaktoren sind nach ihrer Betriebszeit stark radioaktiv und muessen daher als radioaktive Abfallstoffe behandelt werden. Steuerelemente aus DWRs werden unter Wasser zerlegt und anschliessend in Behaelter verpackt. Steuerelemente aus SWRs werden in heissen Zellen konditioniert; dieses Verfahren hat Vorteile gegenueber einer Zerlegung unter Wasser. Ueber die Endlagerung ist noch nicht entschieden, denn die Aktivitaet der Gebinde ueberschreitet z.T. die fuer das Endlager Konrad aufgestellten Grenzwerte. (orig.)Additional details
