Optimization of the superconducting properties in the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system

Description

A synthesis route for the preparation of Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O(12-delta) material has been developed. First the precursor material is prereacted and the material is sintered close below the melting point. A cyclic heat treatment is then used for the formation of samples with optimal superconducting properties. It is found that the material has a Tc of 110K and large superconducting volume fractions at high temperatures. The Tc temperature depends on the oxygen coefficient delta for the compounds Bi2(Sr1-xCax)2CuO(8-delta), Bi2(Sr1-yCay)3Cu2O(10-delta), and Bi2(Sr1-zCaz)4Cu3O(12-delta). It is noted that the Sr/Ca ratio in the first two compounds is significant in that both compounds show extended areas of solid solution, yet only in the first compound does the superconducting volume depend on Sr/Ca
