Description

A procedure that leads to a conformally invariant bosonic string theory in an arbitrary number of dimensions is described. Unlike in Polyakov's formulation, the resulting theory does not contain an additional degree of freedom. Vertex operators are constructed and the spectrum is computed. The theory is Lorentz invariant, reducing to the standard string theory in 26 dimensions. It is argued that unitarity is satisfied at the one-loop level
