Radiation hazard control report

  • 1. Kinki Univ., Higashi-Osaka, Osaka (Japan). Atomic Energy Research Inst

Description

A survey on environmental radioactivities for Atomic Energy Research Institute, Kinki University has been periodically conducted. The survey data on radiation hazard for the facility of reactor and the tracer/accelerator building in 1998 was reported here. Determination of environmental γ ray was carried out using film badge, TLD and area monitors. Health check-up for the persons engaged in radiation works was conducted once a year. The leukocyte numbers of 4 persons of them were in a range of 3000-4000/mm3, but the results from close examination and doctor's questions to the four suggested that their leukocyte values were within the range of physiological variations, but not resulted from radiation exposure. Moreover, there were no abnormalities in the skin and nail as well as lens opacity caused by radiation exposure. The film badge data also demonstrated that nobody had been exposed to radiation over the detection limit. The mean dose-equivalent rate (μSv/h) for γ ray was monthly determined by TLD and the mean rates for 8 different areas of the reactor facility were ranged from 7.83 to 22.3 x 10-2 μSv/h. The dose-equivalent rate was highest for the south area below the reactor-shielding tank. However, the exposure level was extremely lower than the radiation limit. Thus, the present results suggest that there were no influence of long half-life nuclides excluding naturally radioactive nuclides onto the inside and outside of the Atomic Energy Research Institute
