The Japanese ''Inherently Safe and Economical Reactor'' (Iser) is an attempt to combine most of the safety features of the Swedish ''Process Inherent Ultimate Safety'' (Pius) reactor with a substantial reduction in cost. Some of the basic features of the concept are described. (author)
