Erosion of solid krypton targets by protons measured with PIXE

  • 1. Goettingen Univ. (Germany, F.R.). 2. Physikalisches Inst.

Description

Solid krypton targets of 40-600 μg/cm2 thickness were produced at 20 K. The target erosion under proton bombardment was measured with the depth sensitive PIXE method, using a 400-keV proton beam of 0.1-1.0 μA. Below 39 K, the erosion-yield was found to be S=(12.0±1.3) Kr atoms/proton, independent of the temperature and the beam current within 0.1-0.6 μA. The experimental results are discussed in terms of an extended thermal spike model. (orig.)
