A review of ASEAN NIC's electrical energy scenario

This study investigated electrical energy scenarios for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) newly industrializing countries (NICs). The NICs share various similarities, including increased social freedoms, strong political leaders, and increased free trade with other nations in the world. Other features of the NICs which have an impact power on system planning include rapid population and energy demand growth, as well as restricted technical and financial resources. The study examined power system needs in relation to electricity consumption, economic growth, and electrical supply. Power system design and issues related to deregulation and electric utilities were discussed. Electrical supply scenarios were presented for Thailand, the Philippines, and Malaysia. Technical, institutional and financial barriers were discussed and renewable energy options were outlined. The study concluded by observing that a secure reliable electrical supply is needed to ensure economic growth in the NICs. 27 refs., 3 tabs., 5 figs.
