Verification of MMES five plant criticality software

Description

Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Inc., has just finished installing and verifying a new set of nuclear criticality software for use by the criticality safety groups at the five plants operated by MMES for the DOE. This talk reports some of the results obtained in doing the verification of the KENOV.a code as well as some for the XSDRN code. The software codes installed are based on the latest version of the SCALE system, 4.1, but are maintained separately under an independent configuration control plan. The slides that follow give a number of analytically critical (K-eff=1.0) simple systems in spherical, cylindrically and slab geometry, followed by the results of calculating these systems with KENO and XSDRN. The cross section parameters and dimensions necessary to define these systems are given along with a picture to aid in visualizing the system. The results show that KENO and XSDRN calculate these simple systems correctly, verifying the overall flow for these simple systems. For XSDRN these calculations cover most of the useful options available, but for KENO there are many geometric options for which there are no analytic solutions. For these systems it is necessary to do validation calculations against experiments to verify that the code correctly treats the more complicated geometries
