Effect of plate geometry on properties of β-quenched uranium

  • 1. Lawrence Livermore National Lab., CA (USA)

Description

The authors β quenched and α annealed uranium plates to produce plates having a high degree of planar isotropy with regard to thermal expansion. β quenching did not produce entirely isotropic uranium, however, and it was observed that quench textures depended on the severity of the quench and varied in different parts of the plate; near the edges of the quenched plate, a texture was produced that gave strong anisotropy in the plane of the plate. Planar isotropy was produced but, although the coefficient of thermal expansion in the plane of the plate was uniform, it was less than the value for isotropic uranium. (Auth.)
