Phosphorus-32 safe handling techniques for biochemical laboratories
Description
This 15 minute programme deals with some of the specialised equipment and techniques needed for safe working with 32-P. The particular nature of the hazard is explained and the use of perspex shielding is illustrated, including free-standing screens to protect workers, and MacGregor blocks to shield Eppendorf tubes. The principles of safe working with this isotope are demonstrated by an experienced worker carrying out some basic practical procedures, such as: dispensing from the stock vial; preparation of hybridization membranes; use of a centrifuge, etc. The disposal of the solid and liquid waste generated by these activities is explained and illustrated, and there is discussion of the best way in which to monitor personnel using 32-P.
