Ultrastructural changes of type II pneumocytes following thorax irradiation
Description
Ultrastructural changes of type II pneumocytes of rats were observed one month after thorax irradiation with (10-30 Gy) single dose of X-rays. These changes included proliferation, hyperplasia, oversecretion of lamellar bodies appearing as partial cytoplasmic stripping, degeneration and necrosis of type II pneumocytes as well as active phagocytosis of phagocytes. The relationship between the cellular changes and the pathogenesis of radiation pneumonitis is discussed
