Description
Particles moving along the magnetic field lines emit under favorable conditions Cherenkov radiation in a cold, rarefied plasma. A peculiar phenomenon occurs for curved magnetic fields: in for example a toroidal magnetic field the radiation spirals inward and approaches a resonance. Both the generation and the study of the propagation of these Cherenkov modes appear to be within reach of present technology. (Author)

Particulas movendo-se ao longo de linhas de campo magneticos emitem, sob condicoes favoraveis, radiacao de Cherenkov num plasma frio, rarefeito. Um fenomeno peculiar ocorre para campos magneticos curvos : por exemplo, num campo magnetico toroidal a radiacao espirala para dentro e aproxima-se de um ressonancia. Tanto a geracao quanto o estudo da propagacao desses modos de Cherenkov parecem estar dentro do alcance da presente tecnologia. (L.C.)Files
