Photoproduction on deuterium at 4.3 GeV

Description

Total, topological and channel cross-sections for γd and γn interactions at 4.3 GeV are presented. The results are obtained from an exposure of the SLAC-LBL 82 bubble chamber filled with deuterium to a linearly polarized photon beam. Detailed experimental procedures are described for resolving ambiguities and other difficulties related to having a deuterium target. We find that sigma sub(T)(γn) = sigma sub(T)(γp) within about 5% and that the γn average charge multiplicity is lower than γp by 0.42+-0.09. Charge symmetric γp and γn channels have similar cross-sections and those dominated by diffractive vector meson production show a weak energy dependence. (author)
