Results of OECD LOFT Program

Description

The LOFT Program which has been carried out since 1976 as the international collaboration research project on loss of coolant accident was finished in September, 1989. This report is the summary of the results of the OECD LOFT Program carried out from 1982 as the OECD/NEA program. In the OECD LOFT Program, hydrothermal experiment was carried out 6 times, and FP movement experiment was carried out twice. According to the results of hydrothermal experiment, the effectiveness of ECCS and the validity of the current safety standard were confirmed. On the other hand, the LP-FP-2 experiment which was carried out lastly simulated the severe accident due to multiple troubles including the breakdown of ECCS pipings, and offered the data on the process of damage of fuel assemblies and FP movement. The OECD LOFT Program was carried out by using the PWR of 50 MWt output (LOFT reactor) in Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, USA, and the general experiment on LOCA and abnormal transient change in operation was carried out. The experimental setup and the experiment on feedwater loss, small breaking of piping, large breaking of cold leg and FP movement are reported. (K.I.)
