Phenomenological descriptions of the onset of scaling

  • 1. Oxford Univ. (UK). Dept. of Theoretical Physics

Description

The note concerns the scaling of proton structure functions and its connection with the proton-hadron total cross-sections. The connection can be treated phenomenologically and it has been found that the structure functions scale for all q2 in the variable ωsub(w)=(2mν+b2)/(q2 +a2) with the non zero value of the parameter a2. Here it is shown that the ansatz νWsub(2)sup(p)(ω',q2)=(1-Wsub(el)(q2))Fsub(2)sup(p)(ω') where Wsub(el)(q2)=Gsub (E)sup(2)(q2)+(q2/4m2)Gsub(M)sup(2)(q2)/1+q2/4m2 leads to a formula which gives a satisfactory value of a2
