Quantum cosmology of superstrings

  • 1. Wisconsin Univ., Madison (USA). Dept. of Physics

Description

We study the quantum evolution of a ten-dimensional string universe using the Wheeler-De Witt equation with the Hartle-Hawking boundary condition. We find that the universe tunnels from an R x Sn x Sm euclidean space of the size of the Planck scale to an Mn+1 x Km space where the lorentzian space Mn+1 has macroscopic dimemsions, and Km is stable Ricci-flat space. We also find that the size of Km is of the order of the Planck scale only for n=3, m=6 or n=6, m=3. We also study the dynamics and the asymptotic behavior of the dilation field and the gauge coupling constants. (orig.)
