Description

The Mw 9.0 Great Tohoku Earthquake of 11 March 2011 and the associated tsunami were an enormous natural disaster that caused the deaths of more than 18 000 people on the east coast of northern Honshu, Japan. The events overwhelmed the coastal Fukushima Daiichi NPP, causing flooding and prolonged total power loss, which led to the meltdown of three of the six reactors (Units 1–3) and hydrogen explosions that wrecked the buildings of Units 1, 3 and 4. This appendix provides a brief overview of the accident and of the subsequent work to manage the wastes that have resulted from the damage to the nuclear power station and the releases of radioactivity. A detailed account is provided by the IAEA, from which much of the information in this appendix was drawn.
