The achievement of 'Fugen' project
Description
In order to develop ATR type HWR in Japan, the disign of the prototype reactor Fugen was started in 1967, and its construction, in 1970. Fugen commenced commercial operation in 1979 and since then it has operated successfully for more than eight years demonstrating the technical feasibility of ATR type plant. Fugen also contributed to the establishment of the nuclear fuel cycle through positive utilization of plutonium for its fuel (MOX fuel). The successful operation of Fugen was highly appreciated and gave rise to the succeeding project, i.e. the construction of ATR demonstration plant. This paper describes the accomplishments of Fugen project which has progressed for approximately twenty years. (author)
