A computer simulation study of defect and crystal chemistry of non-copper containing ceramic superconductors

  • 1. State Univ. of New York, Alfred, NY (United States). Coll. of Ceramics

Description

In addition to the original Cu-containing high Tc superconducting compounds (La2CuO4, YBa2Cu3O7, Bi and Tl-containing compounds) there have been discovered some non-copper containing superconducting compounds. Some examples are Ba1-xKxBiO3 and La2-xSrxNiO4. This observation clearly indicates that presence of copper is not always an essential condition for superconductivity in new ceramic superconductors. It is noteworthy, however, that the structural features in all of these superconductors are more or less the same. The energetics of such phases is investigated using atomistic computer simulations in order to compare the structural similarities between copper-containing and non-copper containing superconducting oxides. This paper focuses on the defect and structural chemistry of La2NiO4
