Description

This paper reports on the bar B0sB0s mixing parameter, cxs which is an important number to measure since it tests the unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) mass mixing matrix. Taken together with the bar B0dB0d mixing parameter, dd, its value gives an estimate of the ratio of the CKM matrix elements Vtd and Vts, that is xd/ss ∼ |Vtd|2/|Vts|2. As shown by Gilman and Nir, the measurement of this ratio, in conjunction with measurements of |Vub/Vcb| and Vcd, tests the closure of the unitary triangle. Given the high level of bar B0sB0s mixing allowed by current limits on the standard Model, the oscillation parameter xs will probably need to be measured by observing b-flavor oscillations in proper time, rather than inferred from a time-integrated measurement, as is the case in bar B0dB0d mixing measurements. In this paper the authors describe simulations of measurements of xs based on sets of assumed performance parameters. These sets of parameters describe cases that range from the near perfect to more realistic cases that are based upon SLC and LEP detectors. The goal is to determine the maximum value of xs for which reliable measurements can be made
