Solar thermal power: status and prospects

Full text: Solar thermal power is one of the renewable technologies with the potential to make a significant contribution to the energy mix of sunbelt countries such as Australia. The technology has been working in a commercial environment for over 20 years, though there are now many more advanced developments poised to take the technology to the next level. CSIRO's National Solar Energy Centre is demonstrating some of these, such as SolarGas which can be used to generate electricity or transport fuels. This paper examines the status of the technology in all its forms, the present developments under way in Australia and overseas, and the practical ways and means by which solar thermal power can contribute to the energy mix in a significant manner
