Das AVR-VersuchskernkraftiAierk wurde am Ol. April 1984 planmäßig zum Einbau von Experimenten, zur Besichtigung des Deckenreflektors sowie zur Durchführung von wiederkehrenden Prüfungen, physikalischen Messungen und zur Ausführung von Revisions-, Reparatur- und Wartungsarbeiten abgefahren. Da bereits im Vormonat die kontinuierliche Brennstoffbeschickung eingestellt wurde, konnte vor Abschaltung des Kraftwerks nur noch eine Leistung von Pth 41,3 MW bei einer mittleren Heißgastemperatur von aG = 690°C gefahren werden. Der Reaktor wurde durch Handscram-Auslösung abgeschaltet. Dabei wurden im Rahmen einer Wiederholungsprüfung die Fall- und Fahrzeiten der Abschaltstäbe gemessen. Der Sekundärkreislauf und die Kühlgasgebläse blieben noch bis zum 03.04.1984 zur Kühlung der Reaktoreinbauten in Betrieb.
