Doppler profile of nonuniform plasmas and determination of ion temperature

Description
Doppler broadening of a spectral line emitted from inhomogeneous plasmas is studied for the cases of optically thin, axisymmetric plasma in local thermal equilibrium. The ion temperature within the plasma can be determined from edge-on line profiles by means of Abel inversion only for the two spectral intensities, instead of the conventional method using the halfwidth. An example of the inversion is given by considering the hypothetical distribution of plasma ions, and errors in this process are also discussed. (author)
