Description
Recent improvements in flow-cytometric instrumentation and techniques enable us to make very precise measurements of distributions of cellular DNA content in populations of suspended cells. Flow-cytometric measurements of cellular DNA content are being used in tumour research for the detection and monitoring of aneuptheraloid cell lines and for studying the cell kinetics. Similar techniques could also be used for the assessment of cytogenetic damage induced by environmental agents like radiations or chemicals; for example, by measuring dispersion in the DNA content of chromosomes or whole cells in a cell population. Such measurements are based on the fact that the chromosomal aberrations and dysfunction of the mitotic apparatus due to the action by mutagenic agents lead to an unequal distribution of the DNA amount in the daughter cells
