Precise spectrometer for muon experiments
Description
A time spectrometer intended for measuring large magnetic fields, which may appear on μ-mesons, and for observing a two-frequency precession of a μ+-meson in strong magnetic fields is described. The spectrometer consists of a system of plastic scintillation counters and electronic measuring equipment. The scintillation counters are located in the 0-8 kOe magnetic field normal to the muon beam. The detectors are viewed by photomultipliers through 600 mm long light pipes made of organic glass. The main elements of the electronic measuring system are a coincidence-anticoincidence circuit, a pulse shaper with a follow-up threshold, and a time coder. To compensate for the pulse time spread caused by the uncertainty of place of a detected particle scintillation use is made of a ''geometry compensating'' circuit. The time resolution of the developed spectrometer is 320 ps. The differential nonlinearity constitutes +- 1% at a channel width of 55 ps
