24Na radioisotope tracer technique for investigation of water transport of oak trees

Description
Carrier-free 24Na was produced via the 27Al(n,α)24Na reaction using the p(18 MeV)+Be fast neutron source at the MGC-20E cyclotron in Debrecen, Hungary. Distilled water solutions of 24Na+ ions were injected into the tracheas of healthy and sick oak trees. The velocity of water stream in the tracheas was measured at various external abiotic conditions. In a tree showing hardly observable signs of the disease totally blocked water transport was diagnosed. (author) 8 refs.; 2 figs
