Description

The removal and special treatment of selected radionuclides from nuclear wastes can result in improvements in the economics and the safety of the overall waste management system. Processes for the removal of transuranic elements (the TRUEX process) and of strontium (the SREX process) from aqueous waste streams are under development. As one part of this development, some proof-of-principle tests were performed on a high-level waste stream prepared from a sample of spent commercial nuclear fuel. This paper will present and discuss the results of these preliminary, batch contact tests of these two promising processes
