Nature's way to safe disposal: the geological and geochemical way

Creators

Description

For the past four years extensive geological and geochemical investigations have been under way to assess the long-term safety and reliability of the Bushmanland rocks in which South Africa's radioactive wastes is stored. Rating high among the research factors, geohydrologists are also looking closely at circulating ground water at the Vaalputs site to establish which natural chemical reactions would take place in the event of a leakage and thereby immobilise the radionuclides
