Stress analysis and assessment of hermetically sealed container for radioactive material transportation

  • 1. Nuclear Power Inst. of China, Chengdu (China)

Description

According to regulation for the safe transport of radioactive material (GB11806), it is necessary to test the container's safety (including normal transport condition and accident transport condition) first before the containers are used. So primary safety analysis have been done to the container in this paper by using the ANSYS program, then assess the calculation results according to material strength correlative theories. The free falling of the container from the height of 1.2 m and 9 m was simulated with LS-DYNA module of ANSYS program. The types of falling were analyzed in 5 cases: the bottom, the top and the side surface of container impacting target plant, and the bottom, the top of container impacting target plant with 45 degrees. The target plant was rigid body. Finally, the safety review of container was presented. The maximum plastic strain of container is 0.507. It is less than the material plastic strain limitation. It can be seen from the result that some peripheral components could be destroyed, but the hermetically sealed container is safe enough. (authors)
