Description
The annual average radon concentration in Belgian dwellings is 53 Bq/m3, which is comparable to the results of similar studies in other countries. Our study indicates that the infiltration of radon from the ground is the most important source of radon in houses with a high radon concentration. The analysis of the behaviour of the decay products of radon in the indoor environment resulted in a dose conversion factor proportional to the radon concentration of 50 (μSv/y)/(Bq/m3). The average dose equivalent to the population is 2.10 mSv/y, so that about half of the exposure in Belgium is due to the inhalation of the decay products of radon. (Author)
