Generation of hard radiation and accumulation of tritium during electrolysis of heavy water
- 1. N.N. Semenov Institute of Physical Chemistry (Russian Federation)
Description
The appearance of hard radiation during the electrolysis of D2O with palladium or titanium cathodes has been demonstrated. The characteristics of the radiation suggests that it contains a neutron component. Appreciable generation of radiation begins after a 1-3 h induction period; the accumulation of tritium in the volume of the electrolyte is also observed simultaneously. If one assumes that neutron generation and tritium formation are associated with two channels of the nuclear reaction D + D → 3He + 1n0 and D + D → 3H + P, then according to preliminary estimates, the probability of the second channel is more than four orders of magnitude greater than that of the channel-forming neutrons. No excess heat liberation was observed in the experiment
