Condensed xenon scintillators

  • 1. Institut fur Kernphysik, Technische Hochschule Darmstadt, D-6100 Darmstadt (Germany, F.R.)

Description

Liquid and solid xenon were investigated as scintillator media for the detection of charged particles. The LET dependance of the integral light output was studied in a wide range of ionization density using alpha and beta particles and heavy ions of 1.4 MeV/ amu. With solid xenon. scintillation decay times were measured applying the delayed single-photon method. With liquid xenon, a compact transportable detector unit coupled to a LN/sub 2/-cryostat was designed as a detector for medium energy heavy ions. With an integrated solid state detector this unit can advantageously be applied as detector telescope for particle identification
